Boy Rio, a devotee, together with
his siblings however practices their faith differently.
“To be able to take sight of the Black Nazarene while he is on his way out of the Quirino Grandstand is already a huge deal for us”, Rio stated in Filipino.
Unlike Boy Rio, there are still a
lot of other Filipino devotees, who are willing to risk their lives and get
hurt in exchange for a chance to get near the Black Nazarene, some with the prayers
and wishes to be whispered, some with the intention of having their towel be
wiped to the image.
Last year, casualties were raised
during the parade in a number of two deaths and around 1,500 injuries.

Because of this, Father Rey
Paglinuan from the Parish of Most Holy Redeemer said that there are still other
ways to show their faith to the Nazarene without having to get hurt.
[We don’t have to risk our lives just to touch the Black Nazarene because honestly, Quiapo Church is open every day for people who wants to get close with the Nazarene.] |
However, according to Bro. Clifford
Sorita, a sociologist, it runs in the faith of every Filipino the devotion they
do to the Black Nazarene.
He also added, “Maraming nakaka-associate ng kanilang sariling paghihirap sa
paghihirap ni Kristo so para sa kanila mayroon silang parang affinity d’on sa
Nazareno.”
[There are a lot of Filipinos who associated their sufferings from Christ’s, so for them it’s like having affinity towards the Nazarene.]
